Texas State Championship Fiddlers Frolics  Fiddle Contest     

Each year, during the fourth weekend in April, the world's best fiddlers come to Hallettsville to compete for more than $20,000 in prize money in the Fiddlers' Frolics various events. The competition takes place in the Knights of Columbus Hall, surrounded outside by the colorful set-ups of the teams competing in the sausage, beans and barbecue contest.

Things start out Thursday night with the jam session, so bring your fiddle or guitar and join the fun outside on the patio.

Friday evening, the Senior division fiddlers will compete over prize money and bragging rights. Then, 'Cajun and Bluegrass Fun Night' treats visitors to great music as well as crawfish, gumbo, red beans and rice, barbecue, hamburgers and more.

The music competition heats up on Saturday with youngsters in the Pee Wee and Freshman divisions. Then, in the Gone to Texas out-of-state competition, some of the country's best-known fiddlers will be competing with the 'Texas-style' of fiddling that has been handed down over generations. The fiddling competition will take place inside the Knights of Columbus Hall, while the 'Songwriters' Serenade' launches outside on the pavilion. Also, don't miss out on the dance inside the hall on Saturday night.

On Sunday morning, the guitar accompanist contest kicks things off. Then, new inductees will join the likes of Johnny Gimble, Eck Robertson, Benny Thomasson, Red Steeley and Major Franklin in the Texas Fiddlers Hall of Fame.

The contest peaks on Sunday as Texans battle amongst themselves to see who will win the title of Texas State Champion Fiddler. Past competitors include Mark OíConnor, Jim 'Texas Shorty' Chancellor, Asleep at the Wheelís Ricky Turpin, Nashville Grammy-winner Larry Franklin, Ray Priceís fiddler Dale Morris, and six-time National Champion Roberta Rast.

Come for a day or come for the weekend, and support the various vibrant and historic styles of music on display at the Frolics.
